miyalk ranger program

The Miyalk (Womens') Ranger team consists of Facilitator; Lisa Roeger, Senior Miyalk Ranger; Djarrami Yunupingu, and Rangers; Wangawuy Munungurritj and Bawuli Marika.

The program provides an opportunity for Yolngu women to fulfill their cultural obligations to look after their country. The women rangers work alongside the men, in a range of cultural and landscape activities.

One major focus of the Miyalk ranger program is native flora. As a result the team has established a small nusery to grow native plants, for revegetation projects around the IPA.

The Miyalk rangers provide quartintine services for AQIS; conduct flora & fauna surveys; conduct interpretive talks and excursions for school groups; monitor and control weeds; and assist with beach clean ups. They also play a key role in visitor management in Dhimurru's recreation areas.

The Miyalk rangers also assist with other activities such as feral animal control, recreation area patrols, rubbish clean ups, and office training.
