Papua New Gunea NAILSMA Exchange

From the 21st to the 29th of  November 2009,  Mandaka Marika, Managing Director and Sea Country Ranger Daymbawi Burarrwanga from Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation travelled to Medang in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take part in the NAILSMA and Save PNG Native Oceans Exchange.

The exchange was sponsored by Ocean Revolution and was facilitated by Dr Rod Kennett and Joshua Kitchens from NAILSMA.  The purpose of the exchange was to discuss contemporary indigenous Sea Country management issues and projects across the northern region of Australia and PNG.  The exchange also included an introduction of Cyber-Trackers to the PNG natural resource management groups. Cyber-Tracker is a powerful data collection tool which has the potential to collect a range of information quickly and easily by rangers whilst in the field.

The exchange included rangers from Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council, Torres Strait Regional Authority and the Kimberley Land Council.
Mandaka and Daymbawi said a highlight of the trip was the chance to exchange ideas with the local people in Karkum Village and to talk about their home communities and the work they are doing in the Dhimurru IPA.  It was also an opportunity for the networking of different management plans and the rangers came back to Australia with an insight into turtle research and monitoring in the Karkum Conservation area.
As a thank you gift for the exchange NAILSMA and the Australian participants presented a Yidaki (didgeridoo) and Bilma (clap sticks) produced by the Dhimurru Rangers as a token of their appreciation for hosting the exchange.

The trip was an excellent chance for people of different areas of Australia and PNG to take part in cross cultural activities with the primary focus being in Sea Country.
