  Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrwawuy) Coastal Rehabilitation

Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrwawuy) is one of Dhimurru’s most popular beaches, and as a result it is also one of the most impacted. Over the years the area between the carpark and the open beach has become more and more exposed, as plants have died through visitor impact, and exposure to strong winds. Damage to the foredunes due to visitors creating shortcuts, further exacerbated this problem.

During the month of April Dhimurru worked hard to try to reverse this situation by putting in a series of fences and bollards to direct traffic between the dunes, and prevent impact. Dhimurru also planted local coastal native plants, that were propagated in our own small nursery in the hope that the vegetation will grow to establish cover in the area.

More recent work has included the establishment of a watering system, the re-vegetation of a larger area and the installation of interpretive signage.

Senior Ranger Bawuli Marika, said that  ‘Our IPA holds our song lines….we want to protect our country and we want others to respect it”.

Please help  Dhimurru by reporting any damage to the improvements at Wirrwawuy, or any other Dhimurru recreation areas, by phoning 8939 2700 during business hours,or 0488 436 106 after hours/weekends.
