The recent news of Rio Tinto Alcan’s decision to ‘curtail’ the Gove Refinery has left community members feeling uncertain about the future. Dhimurru would like to outline its position and ensure Permit holders that it is business as usual. Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation’s overall vision and objectives remain the same.
Dhimurru’s primary function is to:
In 1990 on behalf of the elders Roy Dadaynga Marika said, 'Be firm and strong for the land, and the strength of your solidarity will sustain you in your cause. The land will exist forever. It must be protected so that it will remain the same, so that it can be seen in the same way that the elders saw it in the past. Our vision and hope is that Yolngu will continue to use the land for all the generations to come.'
The elders said, 'We the old people hope that Dhuwa and Yirritja land will continue to be looked after through the connection of yothu yindi. All the land is Yirritja and Dhuwa. Our songs, our law, our sacred art, our stories are embedded in the land, which is the foundation of our knowledge. That's how we see the land; that is what our Land Rights Act says.'
Dhimurru will be reviewing its business plan and relevant plans of management in order to ensure Traditional Owners’ objectives remain front and centre going forward. Dhimurru will continue to focus on managing visitor impacts in the IPA, including managing Designated Recreation Areas through the Access Permit System, provision of infrastructure, and regular patrols.
Dhimurru is also ramping up its involvement in assisting individual Yolngu land-owners, homeland centres, and local Yolngu community organisations with the development and implementation of resource management strategies throughout the Dhimurru IPA including in the Designated Recreation Areas.
Meanwhile in order to assist those impacted by Rio’s decision and because of the uncertainty regarding many peoples tenure here in Nhulunbuy, Dhimurru is offering a 6 month Access Permit option. A six month General Permit can be purchased for $92 for a family (two adults and any children under 18) and $60 for an individual.
