Dhimurru have a project starting next week that will result in a major improvement to the recreational experience of the Latram and Goanna areas. No longer will we have to trudge down the Goanna recreation area access road that is in very poor condition making it somewhat of a mission to get to one of Dhimurru IPA’s most beautiful pristine fresh water camping areas.
Repair, re-alignment and erosion control work will be carried out over the coming month as well as new camper trailer friendly campgrounds, new infrastructure and, significantly, a new low level crossing to the Goanna recreation area. The new section of track and the crossing will connect the Latram access road to Goanna. This will halve travel time for Goanna by at least 30 minutes. The re-sheeting of the access tracks will also extend opening times of both areas into the wet season.
Recreational demands in the Dhimurru IPA with increasing visitor numbers and more and more people gearing up with camper trailers. Gone are the days it seems of only a few people camping at each area. Dhimurru are needing to develop some camps options for larger groups while still ensuring smaller groups enjoy the serenity of the bush. Dhimurru is working hard to find sensible solutions to all these challenges.
Some changes that will happen with the new layout at the Latram and Goanna include extra parking space for day use visitors and designated camping away from the river terraces. Moving camp sites back from the river terrace will help to manage and reduce erosion and make it easier for more than one group to enjoy each of the waterholes. We hope these changes will allow everyone to enjoy day trips to these recreation areas without imposing on campers and to protect this area from further bank erosion and a boggy mess in the wet season.
While work is in progress we ask that people adhere to safety signage placed by civil contractors YBE (2) Pty Ltd during the construction phase and please pay close attention to our recreation area status sign on Melville Bay Road. We will also be posting updates on our Facebook Page particularly regarding any closures during the next month.
We would also like to make a special thanks to the Department of the Chief Ministers TC Lam & Nathan Recovery Fund who are primarily funding this project for the community as well as the NTG Department of Transport.
If anyone in the community has any suggestions on the campground layout of these two rec areas or any designated areas within the Dhimurru IPA for that matter please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org Subject heading: Dhimurru rec area suggestions.
We look forward to your feedback.
