What Dhimurru Permits Are Needed When Family & Friends Visit

15/11/2013

Dhimurru issues access Permits to Designated Recreation Areas on the Gove Peninsula. These areas include:
  • Guwatjurumurru (Giddy River)
  • Wathawuy (Latram River & Goanna Lagoon)
  • Daliwuy (Daliwuy Bay)
  • Garanhan (Macassan Beach)
  • Ngumuy (Turtle Beach)
  • Baningura (Little Bondi Beach)
  • Yarrapay (Rocky Point)
  • Banambarrnga (Rainbow Cliffs)
  • Gumuniya (Buffalo Creek)
  • Gadalathami (Town Beach)
  • Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrwawuy)
  • Dhamatjinya (East Woody Island)
  • Galuru (Easty Woody Beach)
  • Lombuy (Crocodile Creek)
  • Ganinyara (Granite Islands)
  • Nhulun (Mount Saunders)
The Aboriginal Land Act NT 1979 requires all individuals wanting to access Aboriginal Land to have a current access permit. Dhimurru provides access permits for the above “Designated Recreation Areas”  in several formats depending on the period of time for which access is sought. Children under 18 years are provided with an access permit free of charge regardless of the permit type they need. Visitors (including extended family, must have a current permit to access Aboriginal Land. This means for example that even if the Brown family (consisting of 2 adults and xx children) in Nhulunbuy has an Annual General Permit and a permit sticker is displayed on their vehicle, other Browns (their extended family) are required to obtain their own General Permit when they come to visit.

There are 4 types of General Permit:
  • Annual Permit for families (two adults and their children under the age of 18) valid for 12 months
  • Annual Permit for individuals over 18 years of age, valid for 12 months
  • Visitor Permit for individuals, valid for two months
  • Short Stay Permit for individuals, valid for seven days

Concessions for full time students and holders of a Healthcare card and/or a Pension card are available.

People holding a Visitor or Short Stay permit will not be issued a sticker to display on their vehicle and instead are asked to display their permit form by leaving it on the vehicle dashboard.
