Join Dhimurru’s Volunteers Group!
Dhimurru is planning a week-end of volunteer activities for 27 and 28 September 2008. Dhimurru Rangers and Dhimurru Volunteers will work side by side to clean-up beaches and mark walking tracks along the Banydjarr\a (Daliwuy)-Yarrapay (Rocky Point) track. Dhimurru invites any interested member of the community to lodge their details with Dhimurru. Dhimurru will then sort out its logistics before getting back to confirm your participation. This is a great opportunity to take part in these exciting week-end activities, sharing the hard work as well as the camp fires, and the beauty of this part of the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area. In order to streamline the event and minimize logistics Dhimurru is asking participants to be as self-contained as possible. For more information contact Larrpan at projects@dhimurru.com.au. Details of the two-day activities will be available soon. If you would like to join Dhimurru’s Volunteers, but are unable to come for the next activity, please forward your details to projects@dhimurru.com.au and we’ll keep you updated on upcoming events. |

Dhimurru designated recreation Areas are now open Dhimurru advises that, following the mourning ceremonies for the passing of Dr. Marika, the Designated Recreation Areas of Lombuy, Galaru, and Nhulun, are now open. The closures were requested by senior landowners and those responsible for the ceremonies that were undertaken in the past weeks, as Dr Marika’s incredible life was celebrated and family and friends were given an opportunity to mourn her passing. Dhimurru would like to thank everyone for helping us to honour and respect the wishes of Dr Marika’s family, the memory of Dr Marika, and the observance of Yolngu protocol.

Ghost Nets and Marine Sea Turtles With the commencement of the dry season winds, the population of East Arnhem land breaths a collective sigh of relief. The coolness of the evenings and the end of the wet seasons humidity is appreciated by most.

Nhulun Interpretive Project Completed As of November 2006, the Nhulun Project is finally completed. This project began mid 2004 but due to delays with funding grants and permit approvals, the completion of this project was postponed until now. The project works included the tower upgrade (making it aesthetically pleasing and safe to cyclone standards), the design and implementation of interpretive signs, the installation of a new picnic table and new street signage, and painting the new upgraded tower.

Continued Ghost Net Work By Rangers (Nov 2006) Some of you may remember that on the 16th of September 2005, Dhimurru, Parks & wildlife, Carpentaria Ghost Nets Programme Project Officer, local Police, and Arafura Sea Charters attempted to remove a large floating net off the east side of Bremer Island. The barge tried to tow the net to shore but failed. Two members of the team dived on the net and discovered it was at least 4 x 4 x 11 metres and confirmed it was attached to the bottom of the sea and too large for the barge to tow.

Rangers Reports (Aug 2006) I went to Garma in August at Gulkula for the Festival. We were having workshops talking about tourism, bungul and making spears. My job at Garma was talking to a group of about 11 tourists about Yolngu land, the bush medicine, the trees and the bush foods, the animals like bush wallabies, kangaroos and reptiles.November 2005

Rubbish on our Shores To help reduce the impact of ghost nets and other marine debris, Dhimurru are hosting the NT Project Officer for the Carpentaria Ghost Nets Program, Jane Dermer. Her role is to facilitate and assist coastal Ranger groups on the NT side of the Gulf to start removing the marine debris from the beaches. This is a three year program involving community groups right around the Gulf. |

Imagine life as a marine turtle So far this year, 33 turtles have been removed from discarded nets along our coasts both by Rangers and by concerned Nhulunbuy residents. So far there has only been two flights and one beach walk, but already the figure are equal to the number of turtles taken from nets for the whole of last dry season’s survey period (April to July). Since Dhimurru started the project in 1996, well over two hundred turtles have been found in ghost nets, with only about half of those surviving. |

Ghost Nets Traditional Owners, conservationists, scientists & government representatives from all parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria gathered together in Yirrkala recently to discuss an issue of common concern: Ghost Nets Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been either lost or discarded at sea which continue to fish as if guided by a ghostly hand - the ocean currents & winds - and end up becoming rubbish on our shores. These nets are recognized throughout the world as a menace to all marine wild life but in the Gulf region they are a particular threat to turtles & dugongs. |
