The Aboriginal Land Act NT 1979 requires all individuals to have a current permit. Note: You are required to purchase a Special Permit for some Recreation Areas.

Annual General Permits last for 1 year from the issue date.
We live in Nhulunbuy and already have an Annual Permit for our family. We have family visitors arriving soon, will they need a permit?
All individuals are required to obtain either an Annual, or a Visitor Permit, or a Short Stay Permit. This means for example that even if the Brown family has an Annual Permit and displays a permit sticker on their vehicle, when other Browns come to visit they are required to obtain either a Visitors Permit or a Short Stay Permit.
Do children have to obtain General permits?
Children's permits are free of charge but note children are still required to carry a permit. |

Where does revenue raised from permits go?
Permit charges are levied as a payment for entry they are not a payment for services.
- Income from permits goes directly into the operations of Dhimurru. Most permit income is not paid as dividends to members. Thus revenue raised through the permit system is used to further Dhimurru's constitutional objectives.
- Permit revenue covers a lesser portion of Dhimurru's costs and Dhimurru relies heavily on sponsors to fund projects and operations.
- Major sponsors include: Alcan Gove, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services, Gumatj and Yirrkala CDEP, the Aboriginal Benefits Account, the Indigenous Land Corporation, World Wide Fund for Nature, the Natural Heritage Trust, the Threatened Species Network, Humane Society International, and the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Service.
