Dr Ben Hoffmann
Collaborator with CSIRO
Started With Dhimurru:
2002

Background:
Ben is an ecologist with CSIRO, specialising in ant research. Ben's focus has changed in recent years from traditional scientific research using ants to management of some of the world's worst invasive species. Much of this management work has focused on Indigenous lands, including the Tiwi islands and Kakadu National Park. In 2002, Ben conducted a scoping study into the feasibility of eradicating the exotic Yellow Crazy Ant from northeastern Arnhem Land, which at the time was the only known location of this ant on mainland Australia. This report paved the way for the establishment of this globally significant project.
Role at Dhimurru:
Ben is the Project Coordinator of the Yellow Crazy Ant eradication program. He is responsible for the day to day running of the project, and works in close collaboration with the Dhimurru Senior Ranger as well as other rangers involved in the program.
Comment:
I am really enjoying my time working with Dhimurru on this globally significant project. It is great to learn about Yolngu cultural ways and knowledge, and is a real privilege to share the many experiences that we do in the bush. One of my personal goals from this work is to be fluent in Yolngu matha within the next 12 months.
