Refunds and cancellations
Is the Visitor Access Permit refundable if I change my plans?
No, the Visitor Access Permit is non-refundable. However, you can change the date to a future one if your plans change.
Can I cancel my campsite booking and get a refund?
Yes, if you cancel at least 48 hours before your stay, you’ll get a 100% refund (excluding booking and credit card fees).
What happens if I cancel less than 48 hours before my booking?
You will not receive a refund if you cancel less than 48 hours before the date of your stay.
Will I get a refund if the recreation area is closed?
Yes, you’ll receive a 100% refund if Dhimurru closes the recreation area or if there are events like road closures or COVID-related restrictions that prevent access.
How long does it take to receive my refund after cancelling a booking?
Refunds can take up to 14 business days to be processed and arrive in your account.
Camping
How far in advance can I book a campsite?
Campsite dates are released 183 days ahead (approximately 6 months in advance). It’s recommended to book early, especially during peak seasons.
Can I bring extra campers for only part of the trip?
Yes, use the “Extra Camper” option on the permits page to add campers who are staying only part of the time. Make sure to select the correct dates for each person.
Are there any restrictions on where I can camp?
You must only camp in designated campsites within the permitted recreation areas. Camping outside these areas is not allowed.
Can I access all areas in East Arnhem Land with my Visitor Access Permit?
No, access is only allowed to Dhimurru-managed areas. Some locations require special permits or are closed to visitors.
Can I visit Gapuru (Memorial Park) without a booking?
No, Gapuru is an exclusive campsite with only one booking allowed per day. There is no access to the site unless you have a confirmed booking. Make sure to book early if you plan to visit.
Are there toilets and drinking water available at the recreation areas?
No, most Dhimurru recreation areas do not have toilets or drinking water. You must be fully self-sufficient and bring your own water, camping toilet, and supplies. Always follow Leave No Trace principles.
Reporting and Safety
What should I do if I see unruly campers?
If safe, take a photo (including rego plates) and email it to permits@dhimurru.com.au to report the issue.
Are there crocodiles in the area?
Yes, crocodiles inhabit all waterways in East Arnhem Land. Please be cautious and always stay at least 5 meters away from the water’s edge to stay safe.
Can I bring pets to the camping areas?
Yes, dogs are allowed within the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) if they are kept under control and do not roam freely or disturb other campers. Please respect the environment and other visitors.
What should I know about wildlife in the recreation areas?
Wildlife, especially buffalo, frequently visit the recreation areas. For your safety, do NOT approach or feed wildlife.
Photography/filming
Can I take photographs in the recreation areas?
Photography is allowed in the recreation areas; however, please read all signage before taking photos. Some areas are sacred, and photos are only permitted for personal use, not to be shared publicly. Please respect cultural sensitivities and seek permission when necessary.
Are drones allowed in the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)?
Drones are NOT permitted within the Dhimurru IPA unless you have obtained a drone permit through Nhulunbuy Corporation.
What’s the rules around commercial photography/filming?
Permits need to be obtained from Nhulunbuy Corporation.
Events
Can I hold an event in the recreation areas?
Events require prior approval from Dhimurru Board. A formal request must be sent to permits@dhimurru.com.au to discuss and obtain approval for your event.
Vehicle access
Where can I bring boats and boat trailers within the Dhimurru IPA?
Boats and boat trailers are ONLY permitted at Daliwuy Bay.
Can I bring a caravan to the Dhimurru-managed recreation areas?
No, caravans are not permitted within Dhimurru-managed recreation areas.
Are there nearby caravan parks or alternative accommodation options?
Yes, popular nearby sites include Walkabout Lodge and Manayimi Campgrounds, which provide facilities suitable for caravans and campers.
